How much of a discount should I give to bring in new customers at a new restaurant?

Well my dad just opened up a restaurant in North Hills, California called Taco’s Don Chente. For one reason or another, most of our customers are familys and the older working class. We are located about 3 miles from Calstate Northridge and we are thinking about doing a student discount to bring in a new demographic. My question is, how much of a discount should I give to lure in students? Obviously giving the food away just about assures they come in, but this is still a buisness we have to run so what’s the smallest discount that would lure you in to try a new restuarant?

Maybe offer free drinks with a meal, or if a group of six or more come in one meal is free.

Maybe 15% or something if they are able to show you a student card or maybe consider starting a loyalty program like those cards you buy and the first 5 times you have to buy something or whatever and then on the 6th time you get something free.

Frequent diner card work well. Get a database of your customers by having them sign up for a frequent dining account. That way when ever they come they accrue points on their account after time they can trade them in for food. Birthday give aways and a student discount are also good ideas.

If you start out offering discounts, your clients will expect you to continue offering discounts. The best thing to do is some kind of value added offer.

A coupon for a free drink with meal.
A coupon for a free dessert with meal.
A buy one get on half off deal.
A buy two get one free deal.
A Taco Club Card, buy six get the seventh free.

The idea is that you want them to come in and buy something at full price.

Stay away from discounts. Use the value meal idea of your choice, depending on the caliber of your restaraunt. Taco stand, free soda should do the trick. Dinner house, free wine or dessert. If you serve both lunch and dinner, make the offers at lunch time for students, and perhaps a family offer and senior offer at dinner.

I would offer anywhere between 5-10% for 1 week or you also could offer a free drink with all orders over a certain amount but you can’t make that amount to high lets say $3.-$5.and you could offer that for 2 weeks 4 times a year

Buy one, get one free. Or maybe a free dinner on your birthday if you bring in someone with you.

Buy one Get one Free’s are always good but coupons don’t typically work best for a younger demographic. Maybe a special “student night / college night” promo would bring them in the door. You could start w/ franternities & sororities & offer member discounts if they show a membership card. Once you start getting the “cool kids” in, the others will follow.
